About Us

The Issue
Every year over 5000 young adults between the ages 15-29 make their way to the big city of Tel Aviv in order to make their home in the center of the country, and to open up new opportunities in the way of employment, entertainment and urban lifestyle.
These phenomenons of urbanization and centralization are unique not only to Israel, but exist and are growing in popularity all around the world, In fact, the UN predicts that by the year 2050 over 3/4 of the world's population will live in cities, leaving a weak periphery and increasing social gaps.
Our Contribution
The UN has defined 17 goals for sustainable development to target global challenges, included the challenge of providing sustainable cities. Tor HaMidbar addresses this issue on the local level by building mission driven communities that run social businesses in Israel's geo-social periphery.
Our work ethic is based on full cooperation with local residents, with all activity stemming from needs that they raise. Through these local initiatives we aim to produce solutions to global problams, while increasing the resilience of cities in Israel's periphery.
How it Began - Kama Community
Kama was established over 10 years ago by a group of young people who had served together in the Nachal Youth Movement. Their vision was to develop an intentional community in the Negev with the purpose of helping improve the community from within.
In 2006, Tor HaMidbar was established as the nonprofit arm of the Kama Community; Tor HaMidbar serves to create social change on a larger scale through its projects.
Based in the Dalet Neighborhood of Be’er Sheva, Tor HaMidbar now runs projects throughout Be’er Sheva and Israel. Kama Community members see the organization as the way to realize their shared vision of social change and to create a community based upon mutual responsibility.
